During the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, the Cardinal of the Catholic Church, József Mindszenty took refuge in the American legation of Budapest to escape capture. His temporary stay lasted for more than 15 years. In this long period the prelate and Primate of Hungary, in total isolation, lost adherence to a changing world, a society in transformation and a Church that after the Second Vatican Council opened itself to dialogue with the communist regimes.
The Cardinal does not want to accept this change and uses, in contrast, the only weapon at his disposal, his pen, invoking, through 117 letters, the presidents of the United States to intervene in defense of Hungary.
